From competitive cricket to powerlifting, hypertrophy training and nutrition coaching, Gurmehar has spent years learning how the body works. Now, he uses that knowledge to help his clients understand theirs.
At 15, Gurmehar discovered the gym and, in his words, “his world just switched.” He had grown up playing competitive cricket, but strength training gave him something different. As an underweight kid who had struggled with body image, getting stronger changed how he felt about himself and gave him a sort of confidence he hadn’t experienced before.
That personal experience is part of what eventually led him to become a trainer. As Gurmehar became more experienced in the gym, friends and family started coming to him for advice. Six years into his career, Gurmehar works as a personal trainer and nutrition coach at our downtown Toronto location, helping clients build strength, improve body composition, and develop sustainable habits both inside and outside the gym.
A Personal Trainer Who Teaches the Why
If you ever train with Gurmehar, you’ll notice that he doesn’t just tell you what to do. He wants you to understand why you’re doing it. He believes understanding the reasoning behind it makes clients more motivated, more engaged and more confident in their own training.
That philosophy comes from his own experience. “I have a much harder time sticking to habits when I don’t understand why I am implementing them,” he says. “I follow the same rationale with my coaching.”
It’s also why he doesn’t believe in throwing someone into a generic workout and calling it a plan. The goal is to help clients understand enough about their own training that they can eventually take that knowledge with them outside of their sessions.
Combining Strength Training and Nutrition
This is where Gurmehar’s nutrition background plays a big role in his approach.
As a NASM Certified Nutrition Coach, he spends significant time helping clients understand how their diet supports what they’re trying to accomplish in the gym. In his experience, many people overestimate how much protein they’re eating and underestimate how much processed and refined food is actually in their diet.
But his approach isn’t about handing clients a restrictive meal plan. It’s about building sustainable habits that make sense for their goals and their lives.
Gurmehar’s client Laura is a great example of how he brings training and nutrition together. When she started at Body + Soul Fitness, she wanted to feel better, reduce her pain and change how she felt in her body. By combining strength training with simple, sustainable nutrition changes, Gurmehar helped her build strength, improve her digestion, and feel more energized throughout the day. Within five months, she noticed her body becoming leaner, her clothes fitting differently, and, most importantly, she felt stronger and more confident in her body.
Helping Clients Return to Exercise
Gurmehar especially enjoys working with people returning to training after a long break. For many, getting back into the gym can come with a loss of confidence, especially when they remember what they used to be able to do. Helping them rebuild that confidence, strength, and comfort in the gym is one of his favourite parts of coaching.
One client he’s especially proud of is a senior who came to him with neck, lower back and hip pain and no previous training experience. Through individualized programming, she became pain-free and progressed to complex movements including assisted chin-ups, dips, Romanian deadlifts and squats without pain.
For Gurmehar, that’s the real reward: helping people feel stronger, more confident and capable in their everyday lives.
